What kind of game this is

Crimson Desert is a single-player open-world action adventure. There is no multiplayer and no co-op, and there are no experience levels — power comes from gear upgrades, Abyss Artifacts, three skill trees and Observation Learning. Pearl Abyss's own marketing describes roughly one hundred hours of content, with the main story around fifty hours; community trackers report longer main-story times and full playthroughs far beyond that. Treat all duration claims as estimates, including ours.

You play Kliff, a Greymane mercenary; two more playable characters unlock during the story, each with a separate skill tree and artifact progression, and progress does not carry between them. That structure is the single most useful thing to know before hour ten: you are not building one character, you are building a roster.

What a sound first session looks like

Official material and launch coverage agree on the early shape: the prologue is an extended tutorial that ends in your first boss fight against Myurdin, and Chapter 1 walks you through the city of Hernand, the Abyss system and your first movement abilities. The camp and its reconstruction are a persistent thread — mount taming, camp management and cooking are all part of the launch feature set.

We do not publish a step-by-step first-hour route, because timing and order claims need build-specific testing and go stale with patches. What survives patching is the priority logic: follow the orange main-quest markers, tag fast-travel points as you pass them, and expect chapter-gated bosses to be walls that gear and practice solve, not shortcuts.

Version discipline for a beginner

The game shipped March 19, 2026 and has received numbered patches since — achievements and farming notes on this site carry a patch reference for that reason. When you read an older guide anywhere, including ours, check what patch it names before following it.
